Have you ever heard, “This generation is going to hell in a hand basket”? I guess every generation has had moments like these. The issues may seem to change, but the root problems with life do not.
I am amazed at our short-sightedness as humans.
Today’s solutions seem to become tomorrow’s problems. But we want things NOW. So there are recalled drugs after years of use show the terrible side effects. Plastic surgeries show up as ugly mistakes a few years later. Honest politicians accept help to get elected only to find they owe debts that must be repaid in decisions that go against their scruples. We give children what they want and let them do as they please on electronic access only to watch suicide and depression, anxiety and loneliness increase to the greatest numbers we have ever seen. We gradually turn our schools over to the government for the money it offers and lose the values we want education to teach through our core subjects: hard work, responsibility, critical thinking, gratitude for life and a moral compass.
Someone said to me recently that no matter what we think we should support, there really are no good guys in war.
My only hope is that we can see beyond the confusion and contradictions. We can step out of our self-absorption and cling to the basic truths of peace, love, joy, kindness, goodness, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We can only control our own actions and reactions. We can teach our children and grandchildren the source of these values.
It’s better to give than to receive. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the earth. Trust in the Lord always and lean not unto your own understanding. In ALL your ways, acknowledge God and He will direct your paths.
May our action be based on the above basic truths to offer a positive life to those who have no hope. Our faith must be visible and tangible in the way we live and interact.
